Points To Consider About Do It Yourself Termite Control Approach

Monday 28 January 2008 @ 2:43 am
by Don Pellis

Do it yourself termite control can really save you a lot of money and can even keep you safe from some unscrupulous termite control companies. There are however a couple of things that you may need to look into before performing do it yourself termite control.

Approach with Caution

Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to find homeowners doing their own termite control measures. You should however approach a do it yourself termite control method with some caution. Although some people may have been able to perform these methods successfully, other experts still maintain that doing things yourself may have some disadvantages.

Before you take measures for termite control, evaluate and assess the extent of termite damage and the current condition of termite infestation in your home first. It may take a real expert to know the extent of termite presence and what methods will work best. In some regions, there may also be special methods that need to be employed. Not all individuals also have the necessary skill to use specific equipment and chemicals and may end up endangering the house occupants’ health. Consider a do it yourself termite control only if you are sure that you know what you are doing.

Termite Baiting

Professional termite control companies usually do the termite baiting. Now, there are already few options for homeowners to do it themselves. The reason why baiting may be considered ideal by some people is that there are less harmful chemicals involved. The procedure however may take some time and may not always guarantee complete termite extermination when used alone.

To do the baiting yourself, make a personal inspection of the extent of damage on the property first. You have to take note of wooden areas and moisture rich areas that may be conducive for termites. Some places that may need to be carefully marked on your illustration are places where wood comes into contact with soil, ground or areas with too much moisture and places with trees.

You can begin the process of baiting by strategically placing wooden monitors six feet under the ground around your property. These baits may attract termites after a few months. Once you are sure that the wooden monitors already have termites, you can replace them with treated baits. These baits contain substances that may be ingested by worker ants and brought back to the colony for other members to ingest.

Chemical Treatment

Chemical treatment is more complicated than baiting. Before you consider this do it yourself termite control method, be sure that you comply with state laws for chemical applications, drilling and trenching. Make it a point too to follow product instructions to the letter.

This method involves having to inject treatments into the soil or having to apply them on strategic trenches. Although some chemicals may be able to eradicate termites quickly and effectively, they may also be harmful to the environment and may especially be dangerous for people who accidentally ingest or come into contact them.

Protect Your Pets Against Skin Cancer

Sunday 27 January 2008 @ 2:50 am
by Sterling Ostin

We humans are all too aware of the risks and dangers of skin cancer. We protect our children with high SPF sun block, and we protect ourselves by avoiding the sun during peak hours. But, not everyone realizes that pets are also susceptible to sun damage.

Are animals at risk of developing skin cancer? Absolutely. Most people are surprised to learn that the family dog or cat is very susceptible to the sun’s damaging rays, and care must be taken for their welfare as well as ours. Common sense tells us to limit our pets’ exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, and provide plenty of shade.

Direct sunlight is not the only cause of skin cancer in pets, but it is certainly a major contributor. Other factors leading to skin cancer in animals are hormones, viruses, previous burns and inoculations. Just like humans, some animals also have a genetic predisposition to developing skin cancer. This disease can run in your pet’s family, just as it can run in yours.

Like their fair-skinned human counterparts, light colored dogs and cats are at greater risk of developing skin cancer. Pets with white fur are, of course, at the higher end of the risk scale. Any parts of the body where the coat is thin are at greatest risk. These include the stomach, inside of a dog’s hind legs, and the ear tips, pink noses, and outer eye areas on cats.

Hairless breeds of dogs and cats have no natural protection from the sun’s rays. Dalmatians, pit bulls, pointers and bull terriers are among the breeds of dogs most at risk. It’s interesting to note that when a Dalmatian develops skin cancer, the disease strikes only the white areas and misses the black spots.

Like humans, skin cancer strikes pets later in life. When your dog or cat reaches about nine years of age, you should schedule veterinary checkups every six months. With early detection, your pet will have a better chance of surviving skin cancer.

Early detection is important, but it’s not always enough. Skin cancer can progress quickly in six months, so you need to be aware of your pet’s normal behaviour. Watch for signs that your pet has pain or discomfort. As caregiver, you need to be aware of changes in behaviour that can dictate the need for a thorough physical check-up.

Look for weight loss, changes in eating habits or a disinterest in taking part in everyday activities like playing and going for a walk.

Watch your pet closely for physical changes, as well. Note any changes to moles and watch for newly developed sores on your pet. If you spot anything, get your pet to the vet quickly.

Your pet may his or her discomfort to avoid disappointing you. Dogs and cats are keenly in tune to the moods of their owners and they naturally want to please. Sometimes, animals will follow an innate instinct to hide symptoms out of fear. In the natural world, illness equates weakness, and weakness brings death. Therefore, it can be a natural response for your beloved pet to hide his or her illness.

Like humans, pets can develop skin cancer from excessive exposure to the sun. If your pet loves to spend time outdoors, be sure to provide a cool, shady resting spot, or simply limit the time spent outdoors to early morning or late afternoon and evening hours.

Discovering How Burglar Alarms Work

Saturday 26 January 2008 @ 5:14 am
by Artur Knowles

A lot of people may be using burglar alarms to protect their homes but only very few know how these actually work. Once they know how burglar alarms work, they will know how to utilize them to their fullest potential as well as know which systems would suit them best.

Knowing how alarms work will help them maintain their own system and lessen false alarms. Usually, people just install them and they don’t know how to use them. This might cause more harm and losses than gains for people who are ignorant.

Operating a burglar alarm is just the same as that of any electric circuit. In order to know about burglar alarms and how they work, one has to compare them to a simple electric circuit or appliance. For example, one has to turn on a switch to turn of the lights or any other appliance. This principle works in the same way with burglar alarms. The only difference is that the movements of an intruder will be detected by the switch. If an intruder breaks in a house through a door or window, his movements will be detected by a switch which will trigger the burglar alarm.

There are 2 categories of circuits:the closed-circuit as well as the open-circuit system. In a closed circuit system, when a door or window is shut, the electric circuit is closed. This means that electricity can flow from one end to another in the circuit. But when the door or window is opened by an intruder, the circuit will be open, thus the alarm will be triggered. This works opposite in an open-circuit system. The alarm will instead be triggered when the door or window is closed. The alarm will sound once the circuit is closed.

Let’s have a look at its magnetic sensors in order to understand how the whole system works. The magnetic sensor is composed of:

1. A battery that is powering the circuit 2. A spring-driven switch made of metal that is built onto a door or window frame 3. A magnet that is embedded in the door or window, also lined up with the switch 4. A buzzer that is powered separately with a relay-driven switch

When magnetic sensor will detect the movements in the door or window, it would send signals to the control box which would in turn send a signal to the alarm device, such as a bell. The bell will sound the alarm, which will frighten the intruder or make him go away. The control box also can send a signal to the police department so that they can come and apprehend the intruder. This is located in a safe place so that the intruder cannot find and disengage it.

This is the basic concept of burglar alarms and how they work. Once somebody can get the basic idea, he can then use this knowledge to find better ways to maintain and develop his security system.
